Your First Night: Essentials & an Easier Unpacking Plan

A personal essentials bag, an Open First box, and a plan to start with sleeping and bathroom needs — so the first night in your new place is rest, not rummaging.

The first night in a new place is easier when the essentials are within reach and you have a simple plan for where to start. Here's how to set up your personal essentials bag, an accessible "Open First" box, and a room-by-room unpacking order that starts with what you actually need right away.

A personal essentials bag

Pack one bag that stays with you — not on the truck — with everything you'll need for the first night and the next morning:

  • Medications and a small first-aid kit.
  • Phone chargers and any power banks.
  • Toiletries and a change of clothes.
  • Keys, wallet, and important documents.
  • Bedding — at minimum, sheets and a pillow for the first night.

An accessible "Open First" box

In addition to your personal bag, keep one box accessible and clearly marked "Open First" so it's among the first things off the truck:

  • Towels and toilet paper.
  • Trash bags.
  • Basic cleaning supplies.
  • Useful unpacking tools — scissors, a box cutter, and a marker.

Keep incompatible products separate, and discuss any restricted items with us beforehand so we can plan accordingly.

Label priority boxes "Unload First"

Alongside your room-color tape or written room labels, mark priority boxes with an "Unload First" label so the crew knows to bring them off the truck early. That's the box you'll want open within the first hour — cleaning supplies, the Open First box, or anything you need to function that night.

Prepare for children & pets

  • Pack everyday essentials for kids — comfort items, snacks, chargers, and a change of clothes.
  • Prepare pets' food, bowls, and any calming items, and keep them with you.
  • Arrange a safe space for children and pets away from moving activity — a separate room or a sitter helps.

Set up sleeping & bathroom first, then unpack by room

Get the bedrooms and a bathroom set up first so everyone has a place to sleep and a working bathroom that night. Then unpack room by room according to immediate need — kitchen next, then living spaces, then storage areas and low-priority rooms. There's no rule that everything has to be unpacked on day one.

Final walkthrough at the old property

Before you leave the old place for good, do a final walkthrough: check closets, cabinets, storage areas, the garage, and behind every door for belongings left behind. It's a lot easier to catch a missed drawer now than to come back for it later.
