Organize Your Move With Our Room Color Chart

Color tape or written labels, separate Fragile and Unload First markings, and a quick crew walkthrough — simple organization that makes unloading faster.

A simple labeling system keeps unloading fast and clear. You can use our room color chart — or your own written room labels — whichever you prefer. You don't have to do both. The goal is the same: the crew knows where every box goes without guessing.

Our room color chart

Pick a color for each room and put a strip of that tape on the top and side of every box for that room. At delivery, place a matching color marker at each room entrance and show the crew your chart before unloading. You're welcome to use your own colors — just use them consistently and share your chart with us.

Colored tape identifies the destination — it doesn't replace securely closing and taping the box itself. Fragile contents still need a separate label, because a room color doesn't tell the crew to handle a box carefully.

Color tape or written labels — your choice

The chart is a suggestion, not a requirement. Some customers prefer written room labels in bold marker — "Master Bedroom," "Kitchen" — written on the top and a side of each box. That works too. Use whichever system is clearest for you, and share it with the crew so they can follow it when unloading.

Keep markings visible — and flag fragile & unload-first boxes

Put the label where the crew can see it when the box is stacked. Writing on the top only gets covered by the box above. Put the label on the top and on one side, so it's readable from more than one angle. Where needed, add separate markings:

  • “Fragile” for breakable contents — and don't rely on the room color to mean fragile.
  • “Unload First” for boxes you'll want right away — first-night essentials, cleaning supplies, or anything you need accessible.

Optional: number your boxes and keep a phone inventory

If you're moving a lot of boxes, numbering each one and keeping a simple inventory list on your phone helps. Write the number next to the room label — "1 — Kitchen," "2 — Kitchen" — and note the contents. It's an extra step that pays off when something's missing or a box is in the wrong room and you want to know what's inside without opening it.

Move / Stay / Remove — and the crew walkthrough

Before loading, separate your belongings into three groups and show the crew which is which:

  • Move — Items going to the new place.
  • Stay — Items staying behind — for the next resident, a family member, or a sale.
  • Remove — Items being hauled away or donated — junk removal and cleanout items.

Then do a quick walkthrough with the crew before loading: point out fragile items, existing damage, anything that stays behind, and anything that needs special attention. That conversation prevents confusion and keeps loading efficient.

Keep essentials with you. Keep medications, keys, important documents, small valuables, and a first-night bag with you — not on the truck. Discuss larger valuable or fragile items with us beforehand so appropriate handling can be included in the job scope.

How to use the chart

  • Put a visible strip of the chosen color on the top and side of each box.
  • Use the same color consistently for each room.
  • At delivery, place a matching color marker at each room entrance.
  • Show the crew your color chart before unloading.
  • If using a different color system, share your chart with the crew.
  • Colored tape identifies the destination; boxes still need to be securely closed and taped.
  • Mark fragile items separately because a room color does not identify fragile contents.
