Before Moving Day: What to Arrange

Utilities, building access, parking, keys, and a packing plan you start early — getting the logistics out of the way means moving day is just the move.

Moving day goes smoothly when the logistics are already handled. A little planning in the days before — utilities, building access, a packing plan — means the crew arrives and just gets to work. Here's what to arrange ahead of time at both ends of your move.

Utilities, internet, mail & address updates

  • Schedule utilities (electric, gas, water, trash) to start at the new place the day before you arrive and to stop at the old place the day after you leave.
  • Arrange internet and cable installation for after you have access — not the same morning as the move.
  • Set up mail forwarding with the post office, and update your billing and delivery address with banks, subscriptions, insurance, the DMV, and any regular services.

Elevators, parking, loading areas, keys & building moving hours

At both the pickup and the delivery location, confirm the details that affect how the crew loads and unloads:

  • Reserve the elevator if the building requires it, and confirm the permitted moving hours.
  • Arrange a close, legal parking spot or loading-zone reservation for the truck at both ends.
  • Confirm keys, building access, and any loading-area restrictions ahead of time.
  • Ask building management about applicable fees or deposits for moves — some buildings charge a move-in or move-out fee or require a refundable deposit.

Arrange the help you need

Beyond the move itself, think about what comes next at the new place. Arrange moving help, a cleaner for the old or new unit, and short-term storage if you're between homes. Booking these early beats scrambling the week of the move.

Pack less-used items first — and keep a supplies kit accessible

Start packing the things you use least — out-of-season clothing, guest-room items, books, décor, and anything in storage areas. Save the everyday essentials for last so you're not living out of boxes for weeks. As you pack, keep a packing-supplies kit (tape, a marker, labels, a box cutter, and spare boxes) in one spot so you're not hunting for it every evening.

Keep essentials, medications, keys, important documents, and small valuables with you — not on the truck.
