Moving day is a lot for adults — and it can be even more for kids and pets. With a little planning, you can keep them safe, comfortable, and out of the busiest parts of the day so the crew can work without interruptions.
Pack an essentials bag for each family member
Before you pack anything else, set aside a bag with the things each person — and pet — will need for moving day and the first night:
- Familiar items: a favorite toy, blanket, or comfort object.
- Snacks, drinks, and any bottles or sippy cups.
- A change of clothes and extra layers.
- Medications and any daily care items.
- Pet supplies: food, bowls, leash, waste bags, and any medications.
Arrange supervision away from the action
The safest spot for kids and pets on moving day is somewhere other than the loading zone. If you can, arrange for a friend, family member, sitter, or daycare to watch them during the busiest hours. If that's not possible, designate a closed room or quiet area at one end of the house and keep them there with a trusted adult.
Keep them clear of walkways and equipment
The crew is carrying heavy furniture and walking with limited visibility. Keep children and pets away from hallways, stairs, the truck, and any equipment like dollies or ramps. A quick walk-through with the crew at the start helps everyone know which areas to avoid.
Coordinate access with the crew
If a room needs to stay closed — a nursery where a baby is napping, a room where a pet is secured — tell the crew before loading starts. We can work around it and load other areas first so that space stays undisturbed.
Arrange your own pet transportation
Please arrange transportation for your pets in your own vehicle or with a trusted carrier. We don't transport animals — our crew and truck are set up for belongings, not pets. Plan the ride so your pet stays comfortable and secure during the trip.
Preserve routines and settle in
Try to keep meal times, naps, and bedtimes as close to normal as you can. At the new home, set up a comfortable space first — a bed, a crate, a familiar blanket — so your kids and pets have somewhere calm while the rest of the unpacking happens around them. See our first-night essentials guide for more on settling in.
