Downsizing Before a Move: What to Keep, Donate, or Remove

Sort one room at a time, measure before you decide, and keep valuables separate — downsizing before a move saves time, money, and stress on moving day.

Moving to a smaller place is a chance to decide what actually makes the trip. The more you sort before moving day, the less you pay to move things you don't need — and the easier it is to settle into your new space. Take it one room at a time so the job stays manageable.

Sort one room at a time

Start with the room you use least. As you go, sort each item into one of five groups:

  • Keep — Things you use regularly, need in the new place, or genuinely can't part with.
  • Donate — Usable items in good condition that someone else could use.
  • Sell — Items with enough value to be worth listing and the time to find a buyer.
  • Remove — Broken, worn out, or unusable items that need to be hauled away.
  • Undecided — A holding pile for things you aren't sure about yet — revisit it before moving day.

Measure before you decide what to move

Before keeping a large piece, measure it and measure the space it's going to. A dresser or sofa that doesn't fit the new room costs time and money to move for nothing. Knowing what fits helps you sort with confidence instead of guessing.

Give selling and donating time

If you're selling items, list them early — it can take days or weeks to find a buyer. For donations, confirm the organization's acceptance requirements before you drop things off. Some charities don't accept mattresses, electronics, or certain furniture conditions, so check ahead.

Separate what stays from what goes

As you finish sorting each room, clearly separate the items that are moving from the ones that are staying behind, being donated, or being removed. When the crew arrives, show them which groups are which so nothing that should stay gets loaded by mistake.

Keep valuables and documents separate. Jewelry, cash, important paperwork, and sentimental items should stay with you — not on the truck. Set them aside early so they don't get mixed into the donate or remove piles by accident.

Combine moving and cleanout help

If the items you're removing add up to a big job, you can talk to us about junk removal or a cleanout at the same time as your move. We'll discuss what you need — and the services get agreed in the quote so there are no surprises. See our cleanouts page for more on how that works.

We can't guarantee that a specific charity will accept your donations, that items will be recycled a certain way, or that you'll recover a particular amount from selling. And we don't dispose of restricted items — tires, chemicals, paints, batteries, and similar materials need separate handling. If you're unsure, ask us first.
